Something Interesting About Torchwood

Being an ardent fan of sci-fi, I have been a regular follower of both Torchwood and Doctor Who. I believe guys if you are reading this blog then you too must be a fan of Torchwood or Doctor Who or may be both. Here are some interesting pieces I thought you would find enjoyable as well as informative.

Torchwood happens to be the first Doctor Who spin-off to be turned into a series, and the first successful dramatic spin-off of Doctor Who (2005). A failed attempt to spin-off a series from the original Doctor Who (1963) resulted in the television special, K-9 and Company: A Girl’s Best Friend (1981) (TV), featuring the characters K9 and Sarah Jane Smith.

Are you aware that Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who? All the while the first series of Doctor Who (2005) was being made television pirates were desperate to acquire the preview tapes. Someone in the office had the idea to label the tapes with the anagram “Torchwood” instead of “Doctor Who”, as a security measure while delivering the tapes from Cardiff to London. Writer Russell T. Davies was so much tickled by this idea that it later inspired him to use this anagram as a title when creating a spin-off series.

If you recall, Torchwood members employ a drug called “Retcon” to clean the memories of people who know too much about the organization, in certain episodes. Retcon is a term derived from “Retroactive Continuity” and is used in serialized fiction, especially comic books. This concept is used when new events are meant to completely alter or obliterate the established history of a series.

Although Russell T. Davies had the idea for the series much before he started working on “Doctor Who”, yet that idea could be turned into reality only with “Torchwood” as an official spin-off of “Doctor Who” (2005),

The only member of the Torchwood team never to have had direct contact with the Doctor was Owen. Jack had been companion to two incarnations while Toshiko met the ninth Doctor while examining the space pig in Doctor Who: Aliens of London whereas Gwen and Ianto met the tenth Doctor through the sub-wave network in Doctor Who: The Stolen Earth.

‘Torchwood’ second season finale ‘Exit Wounds’

The episode which brings ‘Torchwood’ second season to an end was entitled ‘Exit Wounds’ and it continued with the stuff left unsolved by the previous episode. ‘Exit Wounds’ received 3.13 million viewers.

We saw that the Torchwood team went to the sites of rift activity. 4 senior police officers had been killed by weevils so Gwen went to the Police Station. Some ghosts are found at the central server building so Tosh and Ianto rushed to the building. They soon found the cause of the threat and shot them. Meanwhile, Owen went to St. Helen’s Hospital.

Captain John began a campaign of terror across Cardiff. He set off powerful explosives that damaged city’s secret nuclear facilities. We also saw the return of the violent captain John Hart. And, the man returned with the only one mission to take revenge on Torchwood. Jack was seen standing against his former friend and encountered John Hart on the hub. In a tough struggle, they both were transferred 2000 years back to the past. The team was separated from Jack and was facing nuclear holocaust…. It was amazing to watch them trying to do their best to save the world. It was really a very emotional season finale…. And it was also hard to believe that they killed two people, including Owen also. I was moved to tears after watching this episode. I am not kinda guy who starts crying after watching emotional stuff on TV but ‘Exit Wounds’ really made me cry. Wholly, ‘Exit Wounds’ was a mixture of comic moments, dramatic moments, sad moments and action moments also.

Well, all episodes of third season of ‘Torchwood’ were brilliant and we enjoyed the show to a great extent. I guess the upcoming episodes would be more entertaining and enjoyable ones.

As of now, we all have set our sights on the third season of series which is likely to premiere this summer.

Only Five Episodes?

Every Torchwood fan must be unhappy with this news that the new season is bringing only five episodes, though the previous two seasons had thirteen episodes each. Hey! Never mind, because this is only the third season which has five episodes and the fourth season will rather contain full thirteen episodes. This has been confirmed by John Barrowman portraying Captain Jack Harness, when he attended Comic con and book Soup in July.

The reason is BBC has shifted this series to BBC1 for the third season and it’s their top channel and they don’t want to bother about introducing characters once again, so they are bringing it with five episodes only so that in the fourth season, viewers will be familiar with the characters.

There are speculations that the other reason is budgetary. Actually all the three series of BBC, ‘Doctor Who‘, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘Sarah Jane Adventures’ have same budget, cast and crew so they had to cut down somewhere. So the situation was either there would be five episodes or there would be no season. So, we are lucky enough to get five episodes.

Here is another supposition that may be BBC is not yet ready to commit to this show, as it has remained in controversies due to portrayal of sex. But I think despite these controversies, people liked the concept of this show and that’s why the third season had to come. But it had been better if BBC would have trusted its fans and had brought, a season full of episodes.

I hope our opinions and comments left on entertainment sites would work well to urge these guys to bring more seasons with shorter gaps. So keep commenting………

Season Three is coming back…..

Great!!! ‘Torchwood’ is returning back to the screen, putting all the ongoing rumors about its cancellation on hold. But now it is confirmed that it’s coming back with new season in 2009. The third series will be named as ‘Torchwood: Children of Earth‘ and will appear on BBC1. Filming for the third season has started from the month of August so we can expect the premier in the beginning of 2009.

It’s a wonderful sci-fi and thanks to the creators for bringing it back. The most enchanting thing about this series is its uniqueness in every episode. No doubt that concept is fantastic, but a new adventure in every episode makes its entertainment factor, perpetual.

Although, being a spin off to ‘Doctor Who‘, many incidents are pretty similar among the two, but still it contains a sort of freshness. This is the reason, why it has made up to three seasons now.

Everything Changes‘ was a blasting premier of the first season. In this episode a cop, Gwen Cooper learns about a group of four people, who call themselves Torchwood and work secretly. Police believes that they are behind strange happenings in the city. While spying, Gwen encounters a lady named Suzie, who uses metal gauntlet to bring the victim back to life temporarily, so that he could disclose about his killer. Head of the Torchwood, Captain Jack Harkness appears in front of her several times, and when she chases him he suddenly disappears.

Ultimately she succeeds in locating Torchwood hub after some investigation and there Jack tells her about noble objectives of this organization, but erases her memory by giving her amnesia in a drink.

Later on, she succeeds in recalling the events and thus Jack offers her to work with Torchwood and she nods for that.

In next episode, ‘One Day’ she is seen working on a mission and after this she continuously works for Torchwood in solving different mysteries. Every episode introduces more disastrous and thrilling attacks by aliens on earth. I think, this show resembles ‘Men in Black ‘movie, the only difference is that here stories are a bit more descriptive.

I love watching and reading science fictions since my childhood. This show always reminds me of those comic books I’ve read in my childhood. But I must admit that on silver screen this is one of the best science fiction and I am glad that it’s back.
